An entertaining opening round contest between veteran Gael Monfils (Profile) and young gun Vasek Pospisil (Profile) takes place tomorrow afternoon at the Paris Masters 2013. Monfils holds a 2-0 lead in the series, which includes the Shanghai Masters several weeks back. Check out the Monfils v Pospisil Head to Head.
The dazzling Frenchman has had a turbulent year yet has still managed to play magnificent tennis. He even managed to produce some of his best tennis this year en route to a shocking upset victory over 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer in the third round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters. He went on to perform at a high level against World No. 2 Novak Djokovic before succumbing in three sets to the eventual champion. Since then, he has lost the opening round in Vienna and will be looking to finish the season strong in his country of France.
Vasek Pospisil had yet another remarkable performance this past week, reaching the semi-finals in Basel and taking Roger Federer to three sets before maturity toppled youth late in the match. It was a fantastic performance from the young Canadian, who continues to experience the best year of his career in 2013. The World No. 40 has had an astonishing season highlighted by an inspiring pre-US Open run in Montreal and impressive performances in the Davis Cup semi-final tie against Serbia, where he won the doubles rubber. Over the past three months, Pospisil has skyrocketed in the ATP rankings to reach a career-high of No. 40. His opening round match in Paris does him no favours though, as he is yet to defeat Monfils on the ATP tour.
This is their third overall meeting and their second on the ATP tour. Their first ever match was back in the first round of the Davis Cup in 2012, where Monfils defeated Pospisil in straight sets. Their second meeting came just a few months ago in Shanghai, where Monfils once again picked up a straight sets victory, albeit a much more competitive one. The Frenchman’s style and approach to tennis is clearly puzzling to Pospisil, who has had a hard time keeping up with Monfils’ craftiness. It will be interesting to see if he will change his approach to tomorrow’s match.
