David Nalbandian (Player Profile) announced at the press conference held in Buenos Aires that he will be retiring from professional tennis.
The Argentine player, who reached a career ranking high of 3 in March 2006 has been struggling with a shoulder injury for several months. The last match he played was back in April, when he helped Argentina to overcome France and book a place in the Davis Cup semi-final.
“It’s very hard to announce the retirement,” said Nalbandian, who has won 11 titles throughout his career, reaching the Wimbledon 2002 final (lost to Hewitt). His biggest wins include a victory over Roger Federer at the 2005 Tennis Masters Cup and two Masters Series titles in 2007 as he beat Roger to take the Madrid trophy, followed by a triumph over Nadal in the Paris Masters final.
In recent years, David has suffered from various injuries (hip and abdominal injury), but could never fully recover from the shoulder injury that has been bothering him this year and was the cause for his slip in the rankings (231).
“It’s not easy what’s happening to me now, my shoulder is not helping me to train as I should for the circuit,” said the Argentine.
Nalbandian will have a proper farewell with some exhibition matches lined up in Argentina in November, with Rafa Nadal being one of the guests. Despite failing to win a Grand Slam, David will always be remembered for his astonishing double handed backhand that helped him to reach two Roland Garros semis (2004, 2006), US Open semis (2003) and the Aussie Open semis (2006).
