Grigor Dimitrov (Player Info) and Tomas Berdych (Player Info) have been confirmed for the AAMI Classic exhibition tennis tournament in Melbourne in January. Former World No.1 Lleyton Hewitt will defend his title at the warm-up event, Stanislas Wawrinka and Richard Gasquet already confirmed for the 2014 line-up.
The World No.22 was last year’s runner-up in Brisbane ATP tournament. The Bulgarian is coming off his first career ATP title in Stockholm, where he defeated World No. 3 David Ferrer in three sets. He will be looking to add to his collection when he arrives in Melbourne for the warm up event before heading to the Australian Open.
“The Bulgarian has a tremendous personality and a fantastic game to watch, especially off the backhand side,” said tournament director Brian Cooney.
Former Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych is currently ranked at No.7 on the ATP tour and has just qualified for his fourth consecutive Barclays ATP World Tour Final after another solid year on the tour.He has also managed to lead the Czech Republic to their second Davis Cup final.
“Tomas has enjoyed another tremendous year on the tour scoring wins over the likes of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Andy Murray,” Cooney said.
The AAMI Classic is contested at the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club from January 8-11, 2014.
