Shanghai Rolex Masters R2
Stadium Court, Second Match
Novak Djokovic (Player Profile) bounced back from his US Open disappointment last week, taking his second straight Beijing title and fourth in total after defeating Rafael Nadal in the final. He looks to stop the Spaniard from breaking his record of five Masters titles in a year and takes on Marcel Granollers (Player Profile) in his opening match. Check out the Djokovic vs Granollers Head to Head.
In Beijing, Djokovic dropped one set on the way to his 38th career title, making hard work of his second round match against Fernando Verdasco. However, he was much improved from thereon out, losing just 16 games in 6 sets against Nadal, Richard Gasquet and Sam Querrey. It was outstanding serving that saw him on his way with Djokovic serving 72% and winning 30 of 33 points on first serve.
It doesn’t bode well for an opponent who was thrashed by Djokovic just under a month ago. Granollers was a loser to Michal Przysiezny in Tokyo in three sets but earned an impressive straight sets win to kick off this week against Janko Tipsarevic.
At 10-9 for the year on hard courts, Granollers should drop to .500 bar a miracle. When they met at the US Open in the fourth round, Djokovic handed out two bagels in a 6-3 6-0 6-0 victory over the exhausted Spaniard. Granollers won’t have to recover from three consecutive five setters this time but will still most likely lose heavily to Djokovic who fell to no.2 after last week’s events.
Prediction: Novak Djokovic in straight sets
