Shanghai Rolex Masters R2
Union Pay Court 3, Final Match
Milos Raonic (Player Profile) and Fernando Verdasco (Player Profile) renew their rivalries in the second round of the Shanghai Masters facing each other for the sixth time although this will be their first hard court meeting. Check out the Raonic vs Verdasco Head to Head.
Back to back defeats on indoor hard in 2011 saw Verdasco hit out at the Canadian’s style – “For me that’s not a real match in tennis, I hope to play soon against him in clay court to show him what it is to play tennis, and play rallies, and run, and not (just) serve.”
Once they met on clay, Verdasco would feel justified in his comments defeating Raonic three times, the most recent in Madrid this year. Verdasco’s year has been up and down with a quarter final and a round one exit in his last two slams. He was the only player to take a set off Novak Djokovic in Beijing last week.
The Spaniard defeated home wildcard Ze Zhang in straights to begin the tournament while Raonic broke Michal Przysiezny at 4-4 in both sets to defeat the Pole in straights. It was a professional performance from Raonic as he looks to bounce back from the disappointment of losing in the Tokyo final to Juan Martin Del Potro.
With Raonic having an outside chance of making the World Tour Finals, a win is vital here and his recent form is good enough to suggest he can equal up the Head to Head at 3-3. He hit 16 aces in the win over Przysiezny and hitting double figures in aces again will be a huge help.
Prediction: Milos Raonic in straight sets
