Juan Martin Del Potro (Bio) faces Nicolas Almagro (Bio) for the second week running in the quarter finals of Shanghai as Del Potro with the winner most likely meeting Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals. Check out the Del Potro v Almagro Head to Head.
Del Potro was the recipient of a walkover in the third round after Tommy Haas had to withdraw from the tournament with a back injury meaning the Argentinian’s winning streak remains at 6.
Meanwhile, Almagro won an emotionally charged clash against Tomas Berdych, recovering from a set down. Almagro was dominant on serve throughout, hitting 18 aces, only to get broken to 15 when serving for the match in the decider. He didn’t let it get to him though and would eventually win the tiebreaker to seal a 6-7 6-3 7-6 victory.
In their only meeting on the main tour – last week in Tokyo, Del Potro won 7-6 7-6 as serve dominated. Both players would break each other once but it would ultimately be up to the lottery of tiebreak. After beating Philipp Kohlschreiber in the opener in Shanghai, the Argentinian has now won his last four tiebreaks.
Should it come to it again, Del Potro will fancy his chances against an opponent who usually wilts under the big occasion.
Prediction: Juan Martin Del Potro in straight sets
