National Tennis Stadium – Third Match Not Before 3pm
Richard Gasquet (Player Profile) looks to solidify his spot in the top ten with a good tournament here but faces a tricky match against Bernard Tomic (Player Profile) in round two. He lost in this round to Ze Zhang last year so can only gain points now. Check out the Gasquet vs Tomic Head to Head
Gasquet bounced back from his defeat to Milos Raonic in the Bangkok semi-final with victory over Florian Mayer. The Frenchman saved all four break points faced in the 6-3 7-6 victory but will need to raise his level against Tomic. Although he didn’t get broken, Gasquet statistically wasn’t all that great on serve. 6 double faults and winning 50% of second serves suggests there is room for improvement.
Tomic managed to avoid the fate that Gasquet did last year but it wasn’t convincing against Ze Zhang. Tomic twice had to come back from a break down to take the first set with the Chinese twice serving for it. He eventually came through in a tiebreak and shored things up in the second with a solitary break to begin the set being enough to complete a 7-6 6-4 victory.
Both are highly talented players and it could make for a great match if both players are at their best. Gasquet is beginning to be more consistent but it’s tough to say the same for Tomic. The Aussie trails the Head to Head 1-2 but was excellent in their last meeting at Wimbledon, taking it in four sets to move into the fourth round.
Prediction: Richard Gasquet in three sets
