World No. 10 Richard Gasquet (Player Profile) will meet fellow countryman Michael LLodra (Player Profile) for the first time in three years tomorrow afternoon in the opening round of the Swiss Indoor Open. It is the fifth time they meet on the ATP tour with Gasquet leading the Head-to-Head series 3-1.
Gasquet defeated Mikhail Kukushkin in the final of the Moscow Open after coming from a set down to win his third ATP title of the year with a 4-6 6-4 6-4 victory. The Frenchman has stated that he will try his best to qualify for the ATP World Tour Finals and will be looking to perform at his best in the upcoming tournaments in Basel and Paris. He will begin his bid for a fourth title with his first round match-up against Llodra. He is currently ninth in the Emirates ATP Race To London and is nearing the 50-match win record in a season for the first time in his career.
Llodra has performed mostly in doubles competition this year and holds a 12-11 overall singles record this season, highlighting his lack of active competition. While this may be the case, he is 2-3 against top ten competition and is capable of toppling the likes of Gasquet if he is playing at his best. The World No. 55 has not played on the tour since a first round US Open loss to Andy Murray. he was forced to withdraw from Tokyo with a back injury and will be looking to end his season on a high note.
Llodra’s sole win over the 27-year-old Gasquet came over nine years ago in Adelaide, Australia and has since been unable to take more than a set off his fellow countryman. Their last meeting was in Indian Wells in 2009 and was a dominant performance by Gasquet that resulted in a bagel second set. It is unlikely that Llodra will pose a threat to his advancement to the second round tomorrow afternoon.
