Canada’s Vasek Pospisil (Player Profile) will meet Ivo Karlovic (Player Profile) in the second round in Basel after both competitors picked up impressive wins in their opening round matches. It is the second time they meet on the professional tour, with Karlovic leading the Head to Head with 1-0.

The Canadian No. 2 advanced to the second round in Basel with a impressive 6-4, 6-4 victory over Robin Haase earlier today. Pospisil hit 3 aces and won 29 of 37 points on first serve as well as saving all three break point opportunities against him for the 87 minute victory over the Dutchman. It was great revenge for Pospisil as well, who had lost to Haase in the second round in Vienna last week. He has had a fantastic breakthrough season in 2013 after a particularly strong pre-US Open run in Montreal and impressive performances in the Davis Cup semi-final tie against Serbia, where he won the doubles rubber with partner Daniel Nestor. Over the past three months, Pospisil has jumped 63 places in the ATP rankings to reach a career-high of No. 40 and finish within the top 50 for the first time in his young career.

World No. 83 Ivo Karlovic picked up his biggest win of the season, when he ousted second seed Tomas Berdych in the opening round. The Croatian didn’t manage to break the Czech throughout the entire match but still emerged victorious with a 4-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2) win. Prior to arriving in Basel, he had achieved similar success in Moscow, reaching the semi-finals just before losing to eventual champion Richard Gasquet. He has complied a 15-12 record this season with 13 of this wins on hard courts.

The only other previous encounter between Pospisil and Karlovic took place this year in Newport prior to the US Open, where the Croatian edged out the match in three sets after losing the second set 1-6. This marks their first ever meeting on hard court and it will be interesting who will be favoured on that particular surface. Both have big serves and impressive shot-making so this should be a fantastic contest.
