Top seeded Angelique Kerber (Bio), who took a wild card to get into the Generali Ladies Linz tournament being played this week in Austria, dropped the first set of her first match to love against Monica Niculescu before changing gears and taking the next two sets 6-1 6-2. She dropped just one game in her second round match and four games in her quarter final. Facing her in Saturday’s semi final match was 4th seed Carla Suarez Navarro (Bio), who won her first three rounds in straight sets with the total loss of just fourteen games. After playing so well in her matches coming into her semi final, the Spaniard was a shadow of her former self and was no threat at all to Kerber, going down to the powerful German 6-2 6-0 in just 51 minutes.
3rd seeded Ana Ivanovic (Bio) took on the young Swiss player, 58th ranked Stephanie Voegele (Bio). Ivanovic beat Yanina Wickmayer, Francesca Schiavone and 7th seed Dominika Cibulkova in straights on her route to the semis, while Voegele battled through three setters in all her first three matches, while showing great nerve and fighting qualities combined with some great tennis. Their semi final was a close run match, with one break in each set being just enough for Ivanovic to wrap up her victory 6-4 6-4 in an hour and seven minutes to make it to her first final since Bali in November of 2011.
