The two semi final matches in the GRC Bank of Guangzhou International Women’s Open were played in this Chinese city on Friday. The first match was between the American qualifier, Vania King (Player Profile), who is ranked at 124; and 58th ranked Jie Zheng (Player Profile) of China. Top seed Sorana Cirstea was beaten in the first round, so King did not face a seed until the quarters, where she disposed of number 8 Monica Puig in three sets, as she did in her first two matches. Zheng won her first two matches in straight sets before upsetting number 3 Laura Robson in three in the quarters. Zheng took the first set 6-3 but King tightened up her game in the second set where the players went toe to toe until 5-5 when King got the break to wrap up the set at 7-5. The players then went off court because of the heat law. There were early breaks in the decider before King took the set at 6-3.
The second semi saw two more unseeded players competing – the Austrian, 64th ranked Yvonne Meusburger (Player Profile) and the Chinese wild card, 112th ranked Shuai Zhang (Player Profile). The Austrian won her first round in straights, her second match in three and then took out 2nd seed Alize cornet in the quarters. Her opponent won her first three matches in straights, beating 6th seed Su-Wei Hsieh in the second round. Zhang continued her fine form on home soil to defeat Meusburger 6-1 6-1 in an hour and seven minutes to move into the final.
