Arthur Ashe Stadium Night Session Second Match
While David Ferrer is favoured to defeat Richard Gasquet in their quarter final, this matchup between Rafael Nadal (Player Profile) and Tommy Robredo (Player Profile) ensures that there will be at least one Spaniard in the semi finals in the bottom half of the draw. Robredo shocked Roger Federer in the last round to stop the highly anticipated Federer-Nadal matchup from happening for the 32nd time. Nadal leads the Head to Head with 6-0.
After coasting through the first three rounds without dropping a set and just 21 games in total, Nadal finally found some resistance from an opponent in the form of Philipp Kohlschreiber. The German showed nerves of steel to take the first set in a tiebreak and some big serving stopped it from becoming a rout. The first two sets saw Nadal surprisingly wasteful on break points but he would finally grind Kohlschreiber down as he was unable to keep up his high level of play in the latter sets as Nadal took it 6-7 6-4 6-3 6-1.
Those predicting Roger Federer’s downfall may not be surprised that he fell to a battling opponent like Robredo but the manner in which occurred will have been surprising to all. Robredo dominated the match for long parts and was a deserved winner but with Federer going 2/16 on break points plenty could have changed if he had played one or two key points better.
Robredo’s record isn’t pretty against Nadal, having taken just one set in the seven losses against him although they have not played since 2009. Coming off the high of defeating Federer and ending his 10 match losing streak against the Swiss, it is very possible that Robredo will suffer a let down and it should be fairly straight forward for Nadal.
Prediction – Nadal in 3 sets
