Arthur Ashe Stadium Third Match Not Before 2.30pm local
Highly likely to be a one sided affair, Novak Djokovic (Player Profile) takes on Marcel Granollers (Player Profile) in round four as he continues his hunt for a second US Open title. The Serbian has made the final four times so far in his career but as of now, has won just one of those four finals – 2011 against Rafael Nadal. Djokovic leads the Head to Head with 1-0.
As expected, Djokovic has made fairly easy work of his draw and has lost just 19 games in his three matches so far. An awful first set against Benjamin Becker can account for just under a third of these as he was taken to a tiebreak by the German before eventually coming through 7-6 6-2 6-2. Ricardas Berankis was defeated 6-1 6-2 6-2 in the opener while Joao Sousa was the most recent to suffer a beating at the hands of Djokovic. The Portugese broke him as he served for the match for a fourth game in total, losing 6-0 6-2 6-2.
While Djokovic won all three matches in straights, Granollers has been doing it the hard way with three consecutive matches going the distance. Jurgen Zopp, who has lost all four of his main draw matches this year, held a 2-1 lead and will feel hard done by that he couldn’t get the job completed while Rajeev Ram had an even bigger lead. The American was 2-0 up in sets before losing, getting broken at 5-5 in the fifth set. An inspired Tim Smyczek failed to finish off Granollers after bagelling him in the third set. Decisively broken at *4-3 in the decider, Smyczek would also falter just before the tiebreak as Granollers capped off a third successive victory in matches going the distance.
It’s very difficult to see Granollers having enough in the tank to put up any sort of a fight against Djokovic. Playing Djokovic at 100% is tough, playing him while below that will not be a pleasant experience. Granollers and his doubles partner Marc Lopez lost 7-6 6-0 last night and that result for the number three seeded doubles team doesn’t bode well. It will be a matter off how many games Granollers can win, rather than whether he can win.
Prediction: Djokovic in 3 easy sets – 6-2 6-1 6-2
