Day 3 at the Thailand Open saw some of the top seeds advance to the quarter-finals with impressive performances. Top seed Tomas Berdych (Bio) cruised into the quarterfinals with a straight sets victory over Roberto Bautista Agut (Bio), Feliciano Lopez (Bio) beat Go Soeda (Bio).
Berdych played a cool and controlled game on Wednesday as he hit 11 aces and saved 4 break points to beat Bautista 6-3, 6-3 in quick fashion. The win keeps Berdych’s bid for his first ATP title of the season alive as well as his chances of qualifying for the Barclays World Tour Final. He is currently 5th in the race and decent performances at the remainder of the Asian Swing would likely guarantee him a spot in the final.
Youzhny (Bio) made his Thailand Open debut earlier today as he defeated Lorenzi (Bio) 6-2, 6-3 in 87 minutes to advance to the quarterfinals. The fifth seed is currently in the midst of a successful season with a 33-20 record and coming off a US Open quarterfinal loss to Novak Djokovic, his first quarterfinal since the year prior at Wimbledon. The Russian no. 1 will meet Denis Istomin in the quarterfinals.
Feliciano Lopez sailed past qualifier Go Soeda (Bio) 7-6(5),6-3 in his opening match. Soeda took an aggressive approach in the first set and was able to break Lopez’s serve before succumbing to the Spaniard in the tiebreak. Lopez hit 14 aces to ultimately secure the match less than an hour later. He will meet either third seed Milos Raonic or Marinko Matosevic.
