Two Spaniards and very good friends Nadal and Robredo will be meeting in the US Open quarter-finals. See Head to Head.
Rafael Nadal (Player Profile) has had a very impressive season so far, he will be aiming to win his 10th title this year. Rafa managed to reach 12 finals in 2013 and his record is electrifying (9 wins to 2 losses). It’s great to see him back to his very best after a shock Wimbledon first round defeat against Darcis. Many tennis experts were doubting in his abilities to climb to the top of the rankings once more, but now he is more than just a potential threat to world no.1 Novak Djokovic.
Nadal’s only set loss at the 2013 US Open was against Philipp Kohlschreiber, having outclassed Harrison, Dutra Silva and Dodig in the first three rounds.
Tommy Robredo (Player Profile), who turned 31 on 1st May, has reached a career ranking high of 5 in August 2006. He has won 12 ATP titles throughout his very colourful tennis career and today will be his 7th Grand Slam quarter-final appearance, first one here at the US Open. The Spaniard had a very good year so far, having reached the Roland Garros QFs, where he lost to fellow countryman Ferrer. His current ranking is 22, but he will go into today’s QF encounter against Nadal as a big underdog, having lost to him in all of their previous six encounters.
Robredo’s probably biggest career win came in the last round as he defeated Roger Federer surprisingly easily in straight sets. In the first three rounds, he overcame Matosevic, Dancevic and Evans.
