World number one Novak Djokovic (Bio) has had plenty of reasons to celebrate in his professional life in the past few years, but can now add a significant celebration in his personal life to the equation. The Serbian tennis star proposed to his long term girlfriend Jelena Ristic over the weekend and got the answer that he wanted from his ever supportive partner.
The pair have been dating for the past eight years and Ristic is an ever present in Djokovic’s box when the Serb is on court, making herself one of the most noticeable significant others in tennis thanks to her vocal and demonstrative support for her man.
This news is big throughout the tennis world but is almost seismic in Serbia, where the couple are akin to Posh and Becks in the UK, in terms of their fame and popularity and because of this news of their engagement had actually been wrongly reported in the past. There was no false alarm this time however, as Djokovic confirmed the engagement himself through Facebook, posting a photograph of the happy couple together with the caption; ‘getting used to introducing Jelena as my fiancé and future wife, so happy.’
One publication amongst the Serbian media may well be slightly overstepping the mark by claiming that Andy Murray will be Djokovic’s best man but the tennis world will surely gather together to celebrate when the couple do tie the knot, an event that is expected to happen at some point in 2014.
