The singles final of the Challenge Bell tournament in Quebec City was played on Sunday after the completion of the doubles final between the number one and number two seeds, Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic and Alla Kudryavtseva of Russia and Arina Rodionova of Australia respectively. The title was won by the second seeds 6-4 6-3.
Czech 3rd seed and 48th ranked Lucie Safarova (Player Info) fought for the title against 6th seed Marina Erakovic (Player Info) of New Zealand, who is ranked at 68. These two players had only met once in the past – in the 2009 Aussie Open – when Safarova won in three sets. This was the New Zealander’s 4th final of her career, having won one and lost three; while the Czech has been at this stage eleven times in the past, with four wins and seven losses.
The first very closely fought set was won by Safarova who just had the edge over her opponent with slightly better serve and break point stats, to take the set 6-4 in fifty minutes. Erakovic started the second set but allowed the Czech to break for a 4-2 lead. At 5-3 Safarova served for the match and made no mistake to take it 6-3 for her 5th WTA title.
