Defending champion Laura Robson (Player Bio) sailed into the second round of the Guangzhou Open with a 6-2, 6-4 win over qualifier Jovana Jaksic (Player Bio). She will be looking to duplicate her remarkable run last year at this tournament when she won her first WTA title.
Jaksic was struggling with her serve early on and allowed Robson to effortlessly break her repeatedly in the opening set. Robson continued to attack her serve in the second set but Jovana appeared more comfortable and was able to make the set slightly more competitive, only allowing Laura to break her serve twice. The match lasted a total of 72 minutes.
Robson is the first British woman in 22-years to reach the final of a WTA tournament and understands that her ranking will plummet if she does not have a strong performance this week. Her performance at Wimbledon earlier in the year: reaching the final 16, put her at no. 27 in the world, which is the first time a British woman has ranked in the top 30 since Jo Durie in 1987. That would not last as the Briton suffered a wrist injury during the Toronto Rogers Cup and was sidelined until the US Open.
While the tournament’s third seed advanced comfortably to the second round, the top seed Sorana Cirstea was unceremoniously ousted by Bojana Jovanovski 6-2, 6-1.
The world no. 35 will meet Saisai Zheng , who defeated Luksika Kumkhum earlier today, to make the second round of the tournament.
