In the first match of the Davis Cup World Cup play-off at Stadion Stella Maris in Umag Andy Murray (Profile) squared off against 16-year-old home hope Borna Coric (Profile). The 525th-ranked Croatian youngster put up a good fight against the Wimbledon champion in the sets one and three, but was helpless in the second one where he was delivered a bagel. The World no. 3 British sporting hero won 6-3, 6-0, 6-3 after slightly more than two hours of clay-court tennis. Murray spoke highly of his teenage opponent, claiming he has predispositions of becoming a Top 100 player in the future. In the clash that followed World no. 35 Ivan Dodig (Profile) brushed aside 23-year-old Daniel Evans (Profile) after one hour and forty-eight minutes of play. The Croat broke his rival a couple of times in each of the sets to earn a 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 victory and equalize the score. In Saturday’s doubles encounter Murray will pair up with Colin Fleming to confront Dodig and Mate Pavic.
Croatia – Great Britain 1-1
After the first day of battle between the Swiss and Ecuadorian Davis Cup team on hard court at Patinoire du Littoral in Neuchatel the hosts obtained a two nil advantage thanks to confident performances by Stan Wawrinka (Profile) and Marko Chiudinelli. The last week’s US Open semifinalist dealt with young Emilio Gomez (Profile), ranked 340th, in straight sets, winning 6-4, 6-3, 6-4, whilst 164th-ranked Chiudinelli came back after a set down to prevail over World no. 295 Julio-Cesar Campozano (Profile). The result: 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, 7-6 (7). On the second day the abovementioned Swiss will meet the pair Roberto Quiroz and Gonzalo Escobar.
