To the joy of the home crowd at Ratiopharm Arena in Ulm Philipp Kohlschreiber (Profile) and Florian Mayer (Profile) overcame their Brazil opponents on the first day of Davis Cup World Group play-off to grab a two nil lead for the Germans. 25th-ranked Kohlschreiber, this year’s Doha title holder, got the better of World No. 127 Rogerio Dutra Silva (Profile) after one hour and a half of hard-court indoor tennis, claiming a 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 victory, whilst 44th-ranked Florian Mayer also won in straight sets, defeating World no. 116 Thomaz Bellucci (Profile) 6-4, 6-1, 6-2. On Saturday Daniel Brands and Martin Emmerich will play against Marcelo Melo/Bruno Soares.

Likewise, the Australians had an excellent opening day on clay court at Torwar Hall in Warsaw as they got hold of a two nil advantage without dropping a set against their Polish hosts. The former number one of male tennis Lleyton Hewitt (Profile), currently ranked 58th, put the visitors in front by demolishing Lukasz Kubot (Profile), ranked 70th, in two hours of play for a 6-1, 6-3, 6-2 victory. The highest ranked Australian Bernard Tomic (Profile) needed a bit more time and energy to overcome World no. 113 Michal Przysiezny (Profile) which he did in two hours and seventeen minutes of play. The result: 7-5, 7-6 (1), 6-4. On the second day the Polish pair Marcin Matkowski and Mariusz Fyrstenberg, ranked 19th and 20th in doubles, respectively, will try to reduce the deficit when facing Hewitt and his doubles partner Chris Guccione.
