A month after their fourth round marathon match at the US Open, Milos Raonic (Player Profile)and Richard Gasquet (Player Profile) face off for a place in the Bangkok final. It was Gasquet that was victorious on that occasion as he improved he improved his terrible fourth round record at slams with the win. The Raonic vs Gasquet Head to Head stands at 1-1.
Having been a break up in the decider, Raonic will have been disappointed to have not held on but he can at least regain some pride if he can defeat the Frenchman here.
An outstanding serving performance from Raonic saw him breeze past Feliciano Lopez for the loss of just six points on serve, backed by an outstanding 86% first serve percentage on his way to a 6-4 6-3 victory to dispel doubts created by his unconvincing performance against Marinko Matosevic in the previous round.
Meanwhile, Gasquet had to tough it out against Mikhail Youzhny in three sets. After some excellent play by Youzhny saw him break for the first set, Gasquet fought back breaking serve five times on his way to a 5-7 6-3 6-1 win.
Raonic took the first meeting between the two in Cincinnati in 2012 but this will be their first meeting on an indoor court. There is no doubt Gasquet is a superior returner to Lopez but if Raonic serves like he did in the last round he will be unstoppable on a court like this. He served 19 aces and a similarly total should guarantee victory and a place in the final where either Gilles Simon or Tomas Berdych await.
Prediction: Milos Raonic in two sets
