In the 1012 Western and Southern Open 5th seed Na Li (Bio) met 9th seed Angelique Kerber (Bio) in the semi finals. This year they met in the third round, with Li leading the head to head stat 6-1. Last year Li won 1-6 6-3 6-1 and she repeated the feat in this tournament, winning 6-4 6-4 in an hour and twenty four minutes. After Li had taken the first set, she ran up a 4-0 lead in the second before the German fought back to 4-5, but Li regained her composure and sealed the set.
4th seed Aga Radwanska (Bio) took on Elena Vesnina (Bio) also in the third round. Vesnina was having a great tournament, having taken out 13th seed Kirsten Flipkens in the first round and Venus Williams in the second round. Radwanska told the reporters that her grandfather had died last Saturday and that she needed to be at the funeral this Saturday. As she had a bye in the first round and only played her first match on Wednesday before beating the Russian in straights 6-0 6-2 in just fifty minutes on Thursday, one wonders about her participation to this stage. Na Li benefits though, being given a free ticket into the semis.
2nd seeded Vika Azarenka (Bio) faced off against 33rd ranked Magdalena Rybarikova (Bio). In a match where poor serving on both sides of the net prevailed – with Rybarikova serving four doubles and Azarenka seven – the Belarusian came through in straight sets 6-3 6-4. “Today I had a little bit of trouble serving sometimes, but overall I felt better than I did in my first match,” Vika told the press.
In a night match Serena Williams (Bio) played 32nd ranked Mona Barthel (Bio). Although the final score was 6-4 6-1, she battled against the German’s massive groundies in the first set before reading Barthel better in the second set.
