Andy Murray (Profile)’s hunt for the third Montreal trophy ended in round of 16 where he was brushed aside by unseeded Ernests Gulbis (Profile). – the Latvian number one thus defeated the Wimbledon champion for the first time in six matches. In a closely fought first set the second seed British player missed a couple of chances to break his rival in the seventh game which came back to haunt him a few minutes later when he dropped a serve as well as the opener. Murray could not find a foothold in the second set either as he saw Gulbis construct a 3-1 lead, yet he broke right back to keep his quarter-final dreams alive. However, a three-time ATP title holder Latvian could not be stopped anymore – he pounced on the favorite’s serve again and sealed a memorable 6-4, 6-3 triumph by converting the first match point after one hour and a half of play.
“I’m feeling better. I’m feeling fitter, faster, more confident with my strokes,” Gulbis explained. “I just tried not to show any weakness.”
His next opponent is home crowd favorite Milos Raonic (Profile), seed number eleven, who ended Juan Martin Del Potro’s (Profile) recent winning streak by beating him 7-5, 6-4. Delpo, who came to Montreal on the heels of the last week’s Washington success, was broken five times in two sets and ended up losing to the Canadian who had a 79% first serve point efficiency compared to Del Potro’s 51%.
Raonic is now the highest seeded player left in the bottom part of the draw at Coupe Rogers as his compatriot Vasek Posipil caused another upset by throwing out seed number five Tomas Berdych after edging him out in the third set tie-break. He reached quarter-finals with a 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (5) victory and will now meet Nikolay Davidenko who won the clash of unseeded Russian players by defeating Alex Bogomolov Jr. 6-4, 6-3.
Pospisil was excited about claiming the World no. 6 Czech’s scalp. “I don’t really know what’s going on now, he said.“Right now it’s okay. It was pretty emotional, I mean, just the hard work that I’ve put in. I mean, to have my first top 10 win here, in front of that crowd, was extremely emotional.”
