The first quarter final match at the Rogers Cup tournament on Friday morning was between 3rd seed Agnieszka Radwanska and 5th seeded Sara Errani. Given that their seeding was so close, these two players did not disappoint and had the spectators on the edges of their seats. In the first set games went with serve to 4-4 when Errani broke for 5-4 with her serve to come, but the Pole broke back and the set eventually went to a breaker. Radwanska took it easily 7-1 to complete the first set in an hour and six minutes. The Pole broke in the first game but the Italian came back to 3-3 and 5-5 before Radwanska broke and then served out the two hour one minute match at 7-5.
The second match saw 4th seeded Na Li take on 20th ranked Dominika Cibulkova. The first set was marked by numerous breaks on both sides of the net, as well as a large number of double faults by both players. They eventually got to a breaker, which Li took 7-1. In the second set the first two games went with serve. Li then broke away to lead 4-1 mainly by serving better before the Slovak got another game. Li then took the next two games to take the set 6-2 and move into the semis.
The third match was between 27th ranked Sorana Cirstea and 6th seed Petra Kvitova. Games went with serve and the players went toe to toe with each other for every point in the first set until Kivtova broke for 5-4 and closed it out at 6-4. Cirstea went 3-0 and 4-1 up in the second set before Kvitova took the next four games. Cirstea eventually took the set 7-5. In the decider Cirstea allowed just two games before taking the set 6-2.
In the final match of the day Serena Williams put an end to Magdalena Rybarikova’s great run which started when she won in Washington last week. Williams won 6-1 6-1 in exactly one hour of almost perfect tennis.
