PinExt Nadal and Del Potro advance in Cincinnati

Just like other title contenders at Cincinncati Masters Rafael Nadal (Bio) moved into third round with a convincing straight sets triumph as he overpowered Benjamin Becker (Bio), breaking him twice in each set. World no. 100 German faced ten break point threats in his first two service games of the match and ended up losing both of them – Rafa served out the opener with a hold to love. In the second set the favorite was more efficient when it came to converting break points as he turned in both of them to eventually win 6-2, 6-2. The fourth seed Spaniard – who has not played in Cincinnati final yet – is meeting Grigor Dimitrov in the round of 16.

Sixth-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych (Bio) progressed in a dominant fashion as well by defeating Jarkko Nieminen (Bio) of Finland 6-3, 6-2. While the Finn managed to respond to the first loss of serve early in the clash, he found no more answers after getting broken for the second time. The Czech kept piling up the pressure in the set number two where he created a double break cushion before sealing the match.

His third round opponent will be in-form Spaniard Tommy Robredo (Bio) who outmuscled last year’s semi-finalist Stan Wawrinka (Bio) in an exciting three-setter full of turnarounds. The opening set ended in a mini-drama as the ninth-seeded Swiss squandered a set point at 5-4 and was broken to love straight after that which allowed the Spaniard to serve out the set just before it would go to a tie-break. Wawrinka regrouped fast to move 4-1 ahead in the second set before leveling the terms and forcing a decider. He broke first in the final set, yet the persistent Spaniard kept digging and succeeded to turn the tide by clinching two consecutive breaks to win 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.

Seventh seed Juan Martin Del Potro (Bio) was always one step ahead of Russian Nikolay Davydenko (Bio) in their second round clash in Cincinnati. Both sets consisted of twelve games with the Argentine failing to serve them out in first attempt, yet prevailing eventually to book his third round ticket with a 7-5, 7-5 victory. He will take on Feliciano Lopez next.
