The final of the Hungarian Grand Prix clay court tournament was played on Sunday afternoon. The two competitors were the 112th ranked Austrian Yvonne Meusburger and 3rd seeded Simona Halep of Romania.21 year old Halep has had a great 2013 season, winning two WTA titles and a total of fifteen out of sixteen of her matches since the French Open – her only loss was in the second round at Wimbledon, where she lost to 6th seed Na Li. Halep led the head to head stat 2-1 going into this final, with each player having won one clay court encounter, but those matches were in 2009 and 2010. 29 year old Meusburger has been a journeywoman on the tour since 1999. Her only final appearance to date was also on clay in 2007 – a match she lost – but this has been a great tournament for her, having taken out 5th seed Johanna Larsson, 4th seed Anika Beck and 6th seed Chanelle Scheepers in successive matches on her route to the final.
Meusburger got proceedings under way and both players won their opening games. Halep then broke for 3-1. The next games again went with serve until Halep again broke for 5-2, but Meusburger hung on until the Roumanian took the set at 6-3. Halep broke in the very first game of the second set, but the Austrian got back to 3-2 and then led 5-3, but the Roumanian made another comeback to level at 5-5. The set then went to a breaker with the lead fluctuating from one side of the net to the other, until Meusburger took it 9-7. The Roumanian broke in the first game of the decider and allowed Meusburger just one game before taking the set 6-1 and lifting the trophy.
