Semi final Saturday at the Italiacom Open being played this week on the clay in Palermo saw top seed and 6th ranked home player Sara Errani, who got a wild card into the tournament, take on 4th seed and 42nd ranked Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic. Errani lost a total of only ten games in her three straight set wins to the semis, while Zakopalova has battled through three setters on her route to the semis. Errani led the head to head 3-2, but they had not played each other since 2011. It took Errani just one break in each set, greatly helped by her excellent service stats, to make her way into the final with a 6-4 6-4 win which took one hour thirty seven to complete.
The second semi was between another Italian, 2nd seeded and 11th ranked Roberta Vinci, who played against Estrella Cabeza Candella of Spain, who is ranked at 108. Vinci won her first three rounds in straight sets, while her opponent has a straights win in the first round before taking out the 3rd seed, Kristina Mladenovic, in three in the second round. She won her quarter final match in straight sets too. Vinci led the head to head 1-0, but they had not met since 2008. Vinci battled in the first set, which she dropped 5-7 despite a huge number of break points on both sides of the net. Vinci saved eleven out of twenty five during the match, her opponent fourteen out of twenty five. The Italian regrouped when she came out for the second set and took it 6-2; and then took the decider by the same margin to book her place in the final against her good friend and doubles partner, Sara Errani.
