Gilles Simon and Spain’s Feliciano Lopez are through to the finals of the Aegon International at Eastbourne. The two players have also coincidentally been drawn to play each other in the first round at Wimbledon next week.
Second seeded Simon defeated former champion Andreas Seppi 6-4, 6-3 to reach the finals – his 14th on the ATP tour. Simon has won 10 titles in his career but never one on grass. Simon said the match was tougher than the scoreline suggested. “It was a real battle from the baseline. Andreas is just a good player. He won two years ago. He made the final here [last year]. He has very good timing, so he never misses stupid shots. You have to work and play great. I think we played a very high level second set today.”
31 year old Lopez, a former Wimbledon quarter-finalist, defeated Croatian Ivan Dodig 7-6(3), 6-1 to reach his second ATP final of the year.
Lopez was delighted with the win considering he missed a few months from the circuit earlier this year due to injuries. “I’m very happy. I mean, for me now to be in the finals of an ATP event, it’s a great feeling. It’s good for me, for my game and for my confidence for the rest of the year. It’s definitely a great week for me.”
The Spaniard has won 8 of his 9 matches on grass this season after making the finals here and reaching the last 16 at Queen’s Club as a qualifier.
Simon leads their head to head 1-0.
