The third fourth round match on Monday was between defending champion and 2nd seed Maria Sharapova and the young American, Sloane Stephens, the tournament’s 17th seed. Sharapova won all her matches to this round in straight sets, while Stephens won her first two in straights and had a three set battle in the third round. Stephens began the match and both players held their serve until Sharapova got the break and then held to go 5-3 up. Stephens, although making too many unforced errors, was hitting the ball as hard as the Russian, held her service game before Sharapova served out the set at 6-4. The Russian broke in the first game of the second set, but Stephens broke right back and held for 2-1. Sharapova then held, broke and held again to go 4-2 up, but Stephens hung in by holding her next service game. Sharapova then held and broke a final time to take the set 6-3 and make it to the quarters once again.
The final fourth round match only got on court at 8pm and was played between 18th seeded Serb Jelena Jankovic and another young American star in the making, Jamie Hampton, ranked at 54. The American took out the 21st seed Lucie Safarova in the first round, won against a qualifier in the second round and then dismissed 7th seeded Petra Kvitova in the third round. Jankovic won her first two rounds in straight sets and then defeated 9th seed Sam Stosur in three sets in the third round. Jankovic, a great defender, got to 5-0 against Hampton, the aggressor in this match who just made too many errors and broke a final time to take the set to love on her 4th set point, in just 25 minutes. Playing better in the second set, Hampton held her first game and got another in the 6th game, but Jankovic played vintage tennis and served out the set 6-2 in 37 minutes.
