Day 1 at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships started in cool conditions on Monday morning and it was not long before there were some shocks, surprises and drama. Maria Sharapova, the tournament’s 3rd seed, played against the 37th ranked Kristina Mladenovic of France. Mladenovic had never won a main draw match at SW10 and had never played on Centre Court, but neither of these facts entered her mind. Playing wonderful tennis and hitting just as hard as her opponent, she stayed toe to toe with the ex champion throughout the entire first set which, without any breaks of serve, went to a breaker. Having served almost to perfection to this point, Mladenovic lost some concentration and served her first doubles to let Sharapova go ahead, but rallied before eventually going down 7-5. The first three games of the second set went with serve before the Russian broke in the 4th game. The next four games also went with serve before Sharapova served out the set at 6-3.
9th seeded Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark played Estrella Cabeza Candela, the 101st ranked Spaniard, on Court 3. The Dane ran through the first set to love in just twenty minutes. Wozniacki started the second set and the first two games went with serve before the Dane broke for 3-1. The Spaniard then broke back but Wozniacki went on to take the set 6-2.
