Marion Bartoli, the French 13th seed, played Francesca Schiavone of Italy, ranked 50. The Frenchwoman played escapologist in her first two matches when she came back from the brink of defeat on both occasions, but she could not do it again. Although Bartoli broke in the very first game, the wily Italian took the first set at 6-2. Schiavone led 5-0 in the decider before Bartoli got on the scoreboard, but the Italian served out for the win at 6-1.
2nd seeded Russian and reigning champion Maria Sharapova took on 43rd ranked Jie Zheng of China. Sharapova ran up a 5-0 lead even though some games went to deuce and advantage Zheng, but the Chinese could not break through. With Sharapova serving for the set, Zheng did get a break to get on the scoreboard, but the Russian served out the first set at 6-1. Zheng broke in the first game of the second set and playing great tennis, held to lead 2-0 and 4-1, but the Russian got back to 2-4 after the longest game of the match and levelled at 4-4. Zhen again broke for 5-4 after another long game in which she rallied from 0-40, but Sharapova eventually took the set 7-5.
In a match between two unseeded players, 67th ranked Bethanie Mattek-Sands of the United States took on 118th ranked qualifier Paula Ormachea of Argentina. Mattek-Sands beat Na Li in three tight sets in her second round match, white the Argentine took out 27th seed Yaroslava Shvedova in straights in the second round. Ormachea got the necessary break to take the first set 6-4, but the American quickly ran up a 5-0 lead in the second set before Ormachea got a game. Mattek-Sands served out the set at 6-1. Ormachea started the decider and after a very long first game the America broke and went on to 3-1 and 5-3 leads before serving out the set 6-3.
