After Maria Sharapova won her semi-final clash against Azarenka and made it to her second consecutive final at Roland Garros, 5th seed Sara Errani, last year’s runner up, went on court to try to emulate the feat, but she was up against top seed Serena Williams. The diminutive five foot four inch Errani had her right upper thigh strapped but the fans still hoped for some of her clay court magic that has taken her to world number five and a grand slam final.
Williams started the first set and from the first minute she produced wonderful groundies that skidded of the line and the corners, giving her opponent no chance to get to the ball. Going about this match in a quiet and calm manner not seen in her earlier matches, Serena raced through the first set 6-0 in just twenty one minutes. Williams hit eighteen winners to just seven errors. She started the second set and continues where she had left off, clinically killing off all of the Italian’s shots – some of which were really good. Errani finally got on the score board in the third game with some lovely touch tennis at the net – and raised her hands in the air in celebration. She did not get another game as Williams gave the fans a master class in tennis and she served out the set 6-1 with an ace in just twenty five minutes. She is now into her second final in Paris after eleven years, which was when she first won the title.
Errani still has a chance of a trophy this year, as she is still in the doubles with her partner, Roberta Vinci and are the top seeds.
