PinExt Robson advances to third round of Wimbledon

British hope and 38th ranked leftie Laura Robson took on 117th ranked Colombian Mariana Duque-Marino on Centre Court under the roof. Robson took out 10th seed Maria Kirilenko, while Duque-Marino got the better of Julia Goerges in the first round. Robson made a nervy start but both players held their first games, followed by a break each. In the 5th game Robson, using the entire court with a beautiful range of stroke play, broke and then held. Duque-Marino held for 3-5 and, with Robson nervously serving for the set, managed to break to trail 4-5. Robson got a final break to wrap up a scrappy set 6-4. In the second set Robson went up 3-0. Duque-Marino then got on the scoreboard, but at this point she had no answers for the Brit’s power game and Robson took the set 6-1 to the British fans’ standing ovation.

Angelique Kerber, the German leftie 7th seed, played Estonia’s 46th ranked Kaia Kanepi. Kanepi was off the tour injured for some months and only recently began playing again. Kerber and Kanepi both had tough three setters in the first round. The Estonian started the first set and ran up a 3-0 lead before Kerber went on a six game winning streak to take the set at 6-3. Kerber got the second set underway and took the first two games. Kanepi then won a game and games then went with serve to 4-3. Kanepi levelled and the set went to a breaker, which the Estonian won 8-6. Kanepi took the first three games of the decider. Kerber then won one game and Kanepi then went 5-1 up when Kerber broke and then went to 3-5. Kanepi served out the set 6-3 for another high seed to bite the dust.
