Just like in 2012, this year’s pre-Wimbledon event at The Boodles features some high caliber names, including world no.1 Novak Djokovic, Tomas Berdych, Marin Cilic, Grigor Dimitrov, Janko Tipsarevic, Richard Gasquet, Alexandr Dolgopolov and John Isner.
The aim of the players is to tune-in for the grass courts of Wimbledon Championships, the most prestigious Grand Slam event starting next week. Second, but not last comes the entertaining of the Stoke Park crowd, providing them with some tennis trick shots and funny remarks inbetween the points.
Yesterday’s Djokovic vs Dimitrov was the most awaiting match and it definitely lived up to it’s expectations. Some superb tennis mixed with a bit of on-court striptease from the players and engagement with the audience marked this sensational encounter, with Nole eventually prevailing 5-7 6-3 10-6 (champions tiebreak).
In the second singles match that followed, Croat Marin Cilic, last year’s winner, defeated Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine after two ‘breakers’ 7-6 (5) 7-6 (11).
The organizers of the event will probably be more than pleased with the weather so far, with all the matches being played as planned.
Here are some Wednesday’s results:
Tomas Berdych (CZE) d. Alexandr Dolgopolov (UKR) 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 (MTB)
Sam Querrey (USA) d. Richard Gasquet (FRA) 7-6(2), 7-6(5)
John Isner (USA) d. Santiago Giraldo (COL) 6-4, 4-6, 12-10 (MTB)
