Rafael Nadal will play Novak Djokovic in the French Open semi finals after both players made light work of their quarter final matches.
Nadal had won 19 consecutive sets in nine victories over Wawrinka and it’s easy to see why as he took control immediately, opening the match with one of the seven total breaks he earned in the match. He had opportunities in every game for the rest of the set but would have to settle just one more on his way to taking the set 6-2.
Wawrinka had shown some fine hitting in his last outing but was having little joy against Nadal. After he pulled back a break deficit midway through set two there were possible hints of a contest but he would be unable to consolidate as Nadal broke back immediately and once more to end the set with 3 games in a row.
After failing to take a break point in the opener of the third, it began to get away from the Swiss very quickly as he fell 5-0 down. He would avoid the bagel but that would be it as Nadal closed the match out in just under 2 hours 6-2 6-3 6-1.
The scoreline wasn’t as one sided in Djokovic’s match but he was also victorious in straight sets over Tommy Haas 6-3 7-6 7-5. Both players looked comfortable on serve before Djokovic kicked it up a notch in game seven, forcing two break points for 15-40. They would be saved but a loose backhand gave Djokovic a third chance and he would take advantage this time. A love hold followed by another break would give the Serbian the first set.
The veteran Haas managed to remain competitive and forced a second set tiebreak after a set with serve dominating. He would have the minibreak at the change of ends at 4-2 but couldn’t hold on to it, losing three straight points. He hit long at 5-5 to give the set point on serve to Djokovic who would make no mistake to take a 2 set lead.
A messy final set saw Djokovic twice fail to hold on to breaks, the latter after he served for the match after failing to take a match point on return. It would make little difference as Djokovic immediately broke back once more for *6-5 and served out the match to love to confirm the match that the majority believe contains the winner of this tournament.
