Simona Halep of Romania played in the first of the semi finals on Friday afternoon at the Top Shelf Open in Holland against the tournament’s 3rd seed, the Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro. Halep is in good form, having won the tournament in Nurenburg last week. Games went with serve until the seventh game when Halep got her first break to lead 4-3 and she never lost another game to take the set 6-3 in thirty five minutes. She then started the second set and immediately broke the Spaniard. She then held her serve, but Suarez Navarro broke back for 1-2. Halep went to 5-2 with Suarez Navarro to serve to stay in the set, but the Roumanian broke once more to take the set 6-2 and the match in just one hour and a minute.
The second semi final match saw 4th seeded Belgian Kirsten Flipkens face off against the Spanish teenager, Garbine Muguruza, who is ranked at 70. Muguruza had a great run to the semis, with victories over 5th seed Mona Barthel in the first round and 2nd seed Dominika Cibulkova in the quarters. Flipkens had three tough battles to reach the quarters where she got the win when 7th seeded Urszula Radwanska retired when leading 4-3. Flipkens began the match and went 4-1 up in just a quarter of an hour. Flipkens then broke again to lead 5-2 and Muguruza held before the Belgian served out the set at 6-3. Flipkens again went ahead in the second set to 5-1 with Muguruza serving to stay in the set, but she got a final break to serve out the set at 6-1 and book her place in the final against Halep.
