Just over a week ago there was just one man who tennis fans around the world wanted to talk about, and that man was Grigor Dimitrov. Firstly, the man who has been eternally known as “Baby Federer”, defeated both world no.1 Djokovic and serious cramp to see out a spectacular victory in Madrid. This victory brought the Bulgarian a resounding ovation from the crowd and glowing praise from his home country and the tennis world as a whole, with the president of Bulgaria’s tennis federation claiming that “Grigor made us proud to be Bulgarians”. The next day saw Dimitrov’s name splashed around the tabloids for a different reason, with his romance with Maria Sharapova coming to the public’s attention.
So then, with the eyes of the world on him for sporting and personal reasons, it seems that “Baby Federer” might well be all grown up and ready to make his mark on the ATP Tour and write his own headlines. Starting at Roland Garros, Dimitrov is surely a man to watch for the remainder of this season and for some years to come.
