16th seeded Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia took on 92nd ranked Marina Erakovic of New Zealand. Although the 6-2 first set score looks like Erakovic won the set easily, it was quite a battle for 41 minutes. The feisty Slovak took a 2-0 lead in the second set before Erakovic came back to 2-3 when rain stopped play. On the resumption, Cibulkova took the next three hard fought games to take the set 6-2 in 50 minutes. Rain again stopped play. Erakovic started the decider and games went with serve until the 6th game, when Erakovic broke and went 5-2 ahead. Cibulkova then saved a match point to trail 3-5 and broke, but Erakovic broke a final time to take the set 6-4.

6th seeded Na Li played against the 67th ranked Bethanie Mattek-Sands of the United States. In the first set Li led 4-0 before the American levelled. The players got to 5-5 before Li broke and held to take the set 7-5. Mattek-Sands started the second set and went 4-1 ahead when there was a rain break. On the restart Li got to 3-4 when rain again stopped play. When play restarted for the second time, Mattek-Sands took the next two games to take the set 6-3. Li started the decider but the American broke immediately and went to a 5-0 lead before Li broke to save a bagel set and held for 2-5. Mattek-Sands then served out for the set at 6-2.

2nd seeded Maria Sharapova faced 77th ranked Eugenie Bouchard of Canada. The Russian built up a 4-1 lead before the rain came down. At the restart, both players held their serve before Sharapova wrapped up the set 6-2. In the second set Sharapova led 2-1 when Bouchard managed to get a break, but the Russian broke back immediately for 3-2. Rain again stopped play with Bouchard at 2-4 and advantage. Play resumed on Friday afternoon and Sharapova broke to get to 5-4 and duly served out the set 6-4.
