In a third round match in the bottom half of the draw, 2nd seeded Russian Maria Sharapova took to the Manolo Santana Centre Court at the Matua Madrid Open to play against the 39th ranked German, Sabine Lisicki. Sharapova had to work hard in the second set of her first round match, sailed through the second round and in this match also had to put in some hard graft in the second set to get past Lisicki. The German only lost four games in her first round match, but battled through two tight breakers in the second round. Against Sharapova on Thursday afternoon, she got just three games in the first set, but took the Russian to 5-5 in the second before Sharapova got the last two games to move into the quarters.
21st ranked Slovak wild card Daniela Hantuchova played 51st ranked Kaia Kaenpi of Estonia. Kanepi took the first set 6-3, but despite the scoreline, it was quite a tough battle. In the second set the Estonian broke in the very first game, but thereafter games went with serve until the Slovak got a break of her own to get back on serve, but Kanepi again broke for 4-3.and sealed the set at 6-4 to book her place in the quarters where she will meet Maria Sharapova.
