Sara Errani, the Italian 7th seed, had to draw on all her experience and use all her renowned clay court skills to get past the 26th ranked Roumanian, Sorana Cirstea, in her second round match on Monday. The Italian took out Ursula Radwanska in straight sets in the first round, while Cirstea got the win when Ayumi Morita retired when trailing 0-3 in her first round match. Errani took the first tight set 7-5, but the Roumanian came back to easily take the second 6-2. The decider was another close set, which Errani closed out 6-4 to move into the third round.
2nd seed Maria Sharapova had to work very hard in the first set of her first round match against the 334th ranked Romanian, Alexandra Dulgheru, whose lowly ranked is a result of having been off the tour due to an injury. The Roumanian played far above her ranking and actually broke the Russian to lead 4-3 in the first set, before Sharapova toughed it out to take the set 7-5. She then cruised through the second set 6-2 to take the match in an hour and thirty six minutes. She will next meet the American qualifier, Christina McHale.
55th ranked McHale played against Shuai Peng of China, ranked at 35. McHale led the head to head stat against Peng 3-1 going into this encounter, with two of these matches going the distance. This match also turned out to be a long drawn out marathon that took two hours and thirty three minutes to complete. McHale battled her way to a 7-5 first set, by Peng came back to take the second by the same score, to force a third set. The American eventually got her hard hitting game together to take the decider 6-1.
