Serena Williams, the top seed at the Internazionali BNL Italia tournament being played this week in Rome, was in devastating form in her match on Thursday afternoon against 14th seeded Dominika Cibulkova. Williams’ serve was working well – she served seven aces – on her way to a 6-0 first set, which took her just 29 minutes. She again led 2-0 before the Slovak got on the scoreboard, but that was her last shout, as Williams ran through the next four games to take the set 6-1 and the match in just an hour and six minutes. She will take on the very in form Spaniard, Carla Suarez Navarro, in the quarter finals.
Third seed Victoria Azarenka faced off against Ayumi Morita of Japan, ranked at 41. Although Azarenka took the first set 6-1, she had to work for most of her points. In the second set the Belarusian raced to a 2-0 lead before Morita had to retire.
8th seed Petra Kvitova took to the court to play against 9th seed Sam Stosur in one of the night matches. She broke to lead 2-1 but Stosur broke back in the 8th game to level at 4-4. At 5-5 all the Aussie pulled away to take the set 7-5. At the start of the second set Kvitova again got an immediate break and then ran away with the set 6-2. Stosur got the early lead in the decider and allowed Kvitova only one game, to take the set 6-1 and move into the quarters where she will take on Victoria Azarenka.
