At the one hour mark in the match between 13th seeded Russian Maria Krirlenko and top seeded American Serena Williams, the score stood at 6-3 5-0. That was when the Russian got on the scoreboard for the first time in the second set, but the American served out the set 6-1 just a few minutes later to move smoothly into the quarter finals.
24th ranked Russian leftie Ekaterina Makarova took on the 14th seed from France, Marion Bartoli, in another third round match. Makarova was the conqueror of 3rd seeded Victoria Azarenka yesterday in a continuation of the higher rated seeds being bumped out of the tournament in the early stages. She made a great start in the first set, getting two breaks to lead 5-2 and serve out the set 6-3. Bartoli started the second set but the Russian broke immediately. Bartoli only got one game as the Russian, with an impressive seven aces and only one double, built a 5-1 lead with Bartoli serving to stay in the match. She held for 2-5, but the Russian, who is known for having difficulty in closing out matches, made no mistake to take the set 6-2 for a good win.
Going into her third round match, the 27th ranked American Varvara Lepchenco led the head to head stat against her opponent, Sara Errani, the Italian 7th seed, two to one. Errani began proceedings but was broken for Lepchenko to lead 3-1. The Italian got her own break to level for 4-4 and games went to 5-5 before Errani took the set 7-5. The Italian built up a 3-1 lead in the second set but the American levelled at 3-3. Errani then won three games in a row to wrap up the set 6-3.
