Play started on Thursday at Roland Garros under heavy dark clouds. On Court 3 18th seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia took on the Spaniard, Garbine Muguruza, ranked at 72. Muguruza came through her first round match in three sets against Karolina Pliskova, while Jankovic defeated Daniela Hantuchova in straights. The Spaniard started off very well, building a 3-0 lead, but the Serb took the next six games to take the first set 6-3. Her winning streak continued, as she then won another six games in a row to take the second set to love, in a match that lasted an hour and five minutes.
9th seeded Aussie Sam Stosur played Krisinta Mladenovkc of France, ranked 46. The first two games lasted twelve minutes and, together with the third game, all went to deuce, but the players each held their serves. Games then went with serve until the tenth game when Stosur, at 5-4, got the first break to take the set 6-4 on her 4th set point, in 56 minutes of high class and very entertaining tennis. The Aussie started the second set and won the first three games before Mladenovkc came from 0-40 to save her service game. Stosur was leading 4-1 when rain stopped play. When the match resumed, both players held, then Mladenovkc broke to love to trail 3-5, but Stosur served out to love and took the set 6-3.
In a tight match on Court 17, Paula Ormachea of Argentina, ranked at 118, faced 27th seed Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan. Shvedova defeated Coco Vandeweghe in three sets, while Ormachea took out Tatjana Maria, also in three sets. Ormachea took the first set 6-4 in 45 minutes. In the second set Shvedova got to 5-4 and deuce when the rain came down. On the restart, Ormachea broke and took the set to a breaker, which she won 8-6.
