The 24th seed Ekaterina Makarova, the Russian giant killer who ousted both 3rd seed Victoria Azarenka and 14th seed Marion Bartoli on her way to the quarters, took on the Italian 7th seed Sara Errani. The Italian got the early breaks and led 2-1 and 4-2 in the first set, but the Estonian got back to 4-5 with Errani’s serve to come. The diminutive Italian made no mistake and sealed it at 6-4. She again got the early breaks in the second set to lead 3-1, 4-2 and 5-3 before breaking a final time to take the set 6-3; and the match in just one hour and seventeen minutes on court.
The final quarter final match was between German 6th seed Angelique Kerber and 16th seed Ana Ivanovic of Serbia. Kerber had a marathon three set match against Svetlana Kuznetsova in the third round, while Ivanovic was 2-5 down in the third set against Laura Robson before taking the breaker 7-5. Ivanovic began proceedings and, after a long first game, ran up leads of 3-0 and 5-3 with her serve to come. The Serb went on to take the set 6-3. Kerber started the second set but, once again, Ivanovic broke immediately and raced to 5-0 lead before the German got a game. That was her last shout, as the Serb took the set 6-1 to wrap up the match in just fifty seven minutes.
