Tuesday, Day Two of the Internazionale BNL Italia tournament being played in Rome this week, saw two seeds to fall in the first round. First out was number 10 Caroline Wozniacki, followed by number 15, Ana Ivanovic. The Serbian played against the 25th ranked Urszula Radwanska of Poland in an up and down match that lasted one hour and forty three minutes. Radwanska made a great start by taking the first set 6-3, but Ivanovic fought back to take the second 6-2. In the third set the Pole drew away early on and sealed the deal 6-2. She will take on Ayumi Morita of Japan in the second round.
The tournament’s 12th seed, Russian Maria Kirilenko, took on the Spanish 58th ranked qualifier, Anabel Medina Garrigues, who gave Serena Williams a real run for her money in the quarter final at Madrid last week, losing in a close third set after taking the second set from the world’s number one player to love. Kirilenko eased through this match in straight sets 6-3 6-3 to book her place in the second round, where she will meet the American, Vavara Lepchenco.
Another hard hitting Russian, 11th seeded Nadia Petrova, faced off against the wily Spaniard, Carla Suarez Navarro, who is ranked at 22. Petrova took the first set 6-3 in just over half an hour, but the Spaniard got an early break in the second set and went on to take the set 6-2, to force a decider. With a break each, games then went with serve until Petrova got to 5-3. Serving for the set she was broken and the Spaniard held to level. The Russian got to 6-5 and 40-15, but Suarez Navarro again levelled and then ran away with the breaker 7-1.
