Ivan Dodig defeated last year’s runner-up Cilic to enter quarter-finals at BMW Open in Munich. Defending champ Philipp Kohlschreiber, Alexandr Dolgopolov and Viktor Troicki are also through.
In an all-Croatian second round match in Munich unseeded Dodig surprised 11th-ranked Marin Cilic as he threw him out of the tournament in straight sets. The countrymen were tied at 1-1 in the head-to-head score prior to today’s clash. Second seed Cilic was broken in the opening game of the match and was unable to threat his opponent’s serve later in the set – Dodig went one nil up after converting the second set ball. The players were unable to hold in the opening three games of the set number two with Dodig moving 3-1 ahead after confirming his second break. He doubled the lead by 5-2 and secured his quarterfinal ticket after the following service game. End result: 6-4, 6-2.
Home crowd favorite Kohlschreiber – he was born in Augsburg, 80 kilometers away from Munich – had an easy enough job against World no. 195 Kazakh player Evgeny Korolev. The opener only went with serve until 2-2 after which Korolev suffered two losses of serve in a row and let the German grab the set. In the second one the Kazakh was broken to love in the third game and as no break balls were generated after that Kohlshreiber advance with a 6-2, 6-4 victory after one hour and five minutes of tennis at the Centre court.
Fifth-seeded Ukrainian Dolgopolov also reached the quarterfinal stage as he sent home Dmitry Tursunov of Russia. The spectator in Munich saw almost spotless serving in the opener with Tursunov wasting the only break ball of the set when leading 6-5. His rival managed to hold the serve and created his first set ball in the tie-break – he converted it to take a one set lead. In the next set the players split two breaks between them before playing another breaker. Dolgopolov was stronger again and triumphed after tucking away the match ball number one. The score: 7-6 (2), 7-6 (3). The Ukrainian will play Dodig in the QFs.
In the clash of unseeded player Serb Troicki progressed with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Czech veteran Radek Stepanek. He is meeting Kohlscreiber in the last 8.
