The Internationaux de Strasbourg tournament being played this week lost its top two seeds in the very first round. Top seeded Marion Bartoli of France lost to 88th ranked Camila Giorgi of Italy in straight sets 6-3 6-2 in the first match of main draw play. In the evening match 2nd seeded Tamira Paszek of Austria lost to the 178th ranked French wild card Virginie Razzano, who famously knocked out Serena Williams in the first round of the French Open last year, also in straight sets 6-1 6-4. Seeds 4 and 5, Su-Wei Hsieh of Taiwan and Monica Niculescu of Romania, were beaten by Anna Tatishvili of Georgia and Misaki Doi of Japan respectively in the second round.
Alize Cornet, the French 3rd seed, made it to the semis where she played against Eugenie Bouchard of Canada, ranked at 93. Cornet, inveterately inconsistent, took the first set 7-5, but dropped the second set on a breaker 5-7. She won the third set 6-3 to move into the final.
The second semi final match was between the Italian Flavia Panetta, ranked at 158 and on her way back from injury, and 112th ranked Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic. Both the Italian and her opponent won their three matches on route to the semis in straight sets. Panetta took the first set with ease 6-1, but Hradecka got the breaks in the second and took the set 6-3. She then ran away with the decider 6-1 to book her place in the final against Cornet.
