Petra Kvitova, the Czech 7th seed, took three sets to beat Aravane Rezai in the first round, while her opponent in the second round, 23rd ranked Shuai Peng of China, took out Camila Giorgi in straights. Kvitova ran up a 3-0 lead before Peng got four games in a row. Kvitova levelled at 4-4 and went on to take the first set 6-4. She then built a 4-0 lead in the second set before Peng again got a run of three games in a row, but Kvitova held and broke to take the set 6-3.
3rd seed Victoria Azarenka defeated Elena Vesnina in the first round and her opponent in the second round, 62nd ranked Annika Beck of Germany, took out Sandra Zahlavova, both in straight sets. The German is the reigning Junior Champion at Roland Garros. She strikes the ball wonderfully and is very fast around the court. The Belarusian ran up a 5-0 lead in the first set before Beck got four games in a row, but Azarenka wrapped up the hard fought set 6-4. Azarenka broke at the beginning of the second set and raced to a 4-1 lead, but yet again the German went on a streak and took three games in a row. Having to fight all the way, Azarenka took the next two games for a 6-3 second set.
13th seeded Marion Bartoli battled through three sets to beat Olga Govortsova in the first round, while her opponent in the second round, 162nd ranked Colombian qualifier Mariana Duque-Marino, only lost two games in her first round match. In their match on Friday, Duque-Marino went 5-2 up in the first set before Bartoli fought back to level and take the set to a breaker, which she won 7-5. In the second set the Colombian again went ahead but Bartoli came back to level at 5-5 before she took the next two games to wrap up the set 7-5.
