Pablo Andujar beat second seed Simon to advance into Open de Nice Côte D’Azur 2013 semi-finals where he will square off against Gael Monfils.
Wild card holder Monfils, currently ranked 109th, cleared another hurdle at the Nice tournament as he eased past unseeded Dutch player Robin Haase in straight sets. The four-time ATP winner Frenchman continued his fine run of form this week and got off to a flying start in the first set, clinching the opening four games of the quarterfinal encounter. Haase finally got on the board, but his rival’s serve was never in a danger in that part of the match and Monfils moved one set ahead after twenty-seven minutes of play. The Dutch escaped to 3-1 in the beginning of the second set, yet he was broken three times in a row after that, allowing the domestic player to win all of the remaining games and wrap up an excellent 6-2, 6-3 victory.
Andujar was up to his task against second-seeded Frenchman Gilles Simon, thus making their head-to-head score 1-1. The unseeded Spaniard saved a triple break ball early in the opener before seizing Simon’s serve in the ninth game – he served out the opening set next. In the second one the home crowd favorite constructed a 4-2 lead, but was unable to keep the one break advantage as he dropped two serves in a row and exited the tournament after Andujar claimed his semifinal ticket with a hold to love. End score: 6-4, 7-5. None of the seeded players has made it to the semifinal stage in Nice.
