The ladies final of the Portugal Open in Oeiras took place on Saturday afternoon between the 4th seeded Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro and the 3rd seeded Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
The Spaniard, who lost in the final of this tournament last year, got the early break to go 4-2 ahead, but the Russian came back to 4-5. Suarez Navarro then served for the set, but Pavlyuchenkova broke to level the score, hold and break again to take the first set 7-5, despite having served five double faults to her opponent’s one, plus two aces. Pavlyuchenkova started the second set and broke in the second game and quickly built up a 3-0 lead before the Spaniard got onto the scoreboard and narrowed Pavlyuchenkova’s lead to just one break, with the score at 4-2, but Pavlyuchenkova again held to lead 5-2 with the Spaniard to serve to stay in the final. History repeated itself as the Russian took the set 6-2 on her first match point at 40-15, for game, set and match – and to lift the winner’s trophy. Delight for Pavlyuchenkova, but disappointment for Suarez Navarro, who lost the final of this tournament for the second year running.
